Christopher Johnson
Multi-instrumentalist Christopher Johnson has been part of New York’s classical and church music scenes for over two decades. Currently Director of Chapel Music at The Interchurch Center (on the Upper West Side), some of Chris’ previous appointments have included Director of Music and Organist at The Riverside Church, Artist-in-Residence at Union Theological Seminary, and Adjunct Organist at Columbia University.
An orchestra nerd for as long as he can remember, Chris began his career in the viola section of the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra at age 16 and performed as solo violist, flutist and bassoonist with a number of professional orchestras throughout the Midwest before going to college. His undergraduate and graduate degrees in flute, viola, and organ were taken at The Cleveland Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Yale’s Institute of Sacred Music. Since 2007, he has had the great pleasure of performing as a flutist with The Knights.
An enthusiastic and avid flyer of airplanes, Chris is also a type-rated commercial pilot with five flight and ground instructor ratings. Fascinated with languages and linguistics, he loves pondering German, Norwegian, and Egyptian Arabic grammar while mowing endless acres of endless grass at his Endless Mountains (northern PA) home.
